Important Information About Dental Veneers

Dental Veneers New York, NY

There is a very simple way to improve your smile and the overall appearance of your front teeth, and this option is known as dental veneers. They look just like your natural teeth, and they can correct a wide range of dental issues, such as chipped crooked or misshapen teeth. Sometimes teeth become stained, and there is no way to whiten them. When this happens, a dental veneer can restore that tooth to its beautiful lustrous appearance, and no one will be able to see any difference when they look at you. There are four basic facts about veneers that may help you decide if they are right for you.

Commonly made of porcelain or composite resin

While veneers are commonly made from porcelain or composite resins, most people will choose porcelain veneers because they look more natural and are highly resistant to stains. Another benefit to porcelain is that it is durable and good for your gums. You can also have your veneers made to match the precise color of your surrounding teeth so that they blend in perfectly, making it just about impossible to tell them from your other teeth.

Usually made one of two ways

The more common option for having dental veneers made is by having your dentist take an impression of the patient's teeth and having it sent over to a laboratory to be manufactured. This process takes about two weeks, and then the veneers are ready to be installed. The patient is then notified to come in for one final visit so that they can be restored with a brighter smile.

The other option is to have same-day veneers made. This would involve using digital imaging and a milling machine that works like a 3-D printer. These same-day veneers are made from ceramic blocks, and the entire process usually takes less than an hour.

The traditional procedure can take three trips

During the first trip, the patient is educated by the dentist about veneers. For example, the dentist will explain that the veneers will permanently change their teeth and what can normally be expected once they have been installed. Because the change is permanent, the dentist may want the patient to take some time to decide if this decision is right for them.

In most cases, the patient decides that veneers are right for them, and they come in for a second visit where the dentist removes portions of the patient's tooth enamel and makes an impression of their teeth. In the meantime, the patient is fitted with temporary veneers to be left on until the permanent veneers are ready.

In about a couple of weeks, the veneers are ready from the lab, and the patient is called in for a third visit. During this third visit, the veneers are bonded to the patient's teeth and evaluated to determine a proper fit.

No additional care is needed

Dental veneers do not require any additional tooth care. You simply brush and floss them as you do your other teeth. Then you just come in for regular dental checkups so that your dentist can examine them along with all your other teeth.
