Implant Supported Dentures

Implant Supported Dentures Versus Traditional Dentures

Advancements in dentistry have led to several innovative tooth replacement options that go beyond the traditional dentures, such as implant supported dentures. Though dentures have fulfilled their purpose for a long time, the old models, when compared with the newer ones, have certain shortcomings. Before you settle on a tooth replacement method, do your homework and compare the most popular options, two of which include dentures and implant supported dentures.

Missing teeth can wreak havoc on a person’s health

There are several disadvantages that come with missing teeth. For starters, missing teeth often pose a cosmetic concern and may even be a source of embarrassment. People who live with gap-filled smiles often feel self-conscious around others and limited in activities, careers and other aspects of life.

Missing teeth can affect the health of a person’s entire mouth, bite, jaw and smile as well. Without teeth, the cheeks and lips may begin to collapse inward, resulting in an aged appearance. As a person loses more teeth, the condition worsens. This occurs because, when one tooth falls out, the neighboring teeth loosen and shift. Eventually, a patient may experience pain and reduction of bone density leading to further tooth loss.

Solutions: Traditional dentures vs. implant supported dentures

Both dentures and implant supported dentures can help stave off or slow down the negative effects of tooth loss. The type chosen depends on the patient's needs.

Traditional dentures

Traditional dentures are the standard tooth replacement option. This system is removable and consists of a metal, acrylic or nylon base made to look like the gums, with prosthetic teeth attached. Though a dentist will customize a piece so that it fits along a patient’s gumline, dentures may be uncomfortable and cause blisters and soreness. Removeable dentures do not help to retain the shape of the face. As the face collapses in, the dentures no longer fit properly, and so the patient must return to the dentist to have them adjusted or a new piece made.

Dentures require extra care. Because they are not as secure as other tooth replacement options, patients should avoid hard foods and sticky foods. Many denture patients prefer soft foods for comfort.

Patients should also remove dentures before going to bed. The dentures should sit in a solution all night for cleanliness and to preserve the materials.

Implant supported dentures

Implant supported dentures utilize implants to support the bridge of prosthetics. Once the implants have fused to the jawbone, the dentist cements the bridge into place, ensuring it will remain secure while a patient engages in typical daily activities, such as eating, drinking, smiling, talking and laughing.

Unlike traditional dentures, implant supported dentures do not rub the gum line, and a patient does not have to remove them at night. In fact, the only time the prosthesis comes out is when a dentist removes it for cleaning. This option also helps to maintain the structure of the jawbone and therefore allows patients to better retain the shape of the face.

Conclusion

Dentures are a useful tooth replacement option. However, if a person has the means and is a viable candidate, implant supported dentures are often the recommended option. Talk with a dentist to learn more.
