How to Care For Your New Dentures and Make Them Last Longer

Dentures are a common treatment option for people who have lost some or all of their teeth. They help restore the mouth's functionality while boosting a person's confidence by restoring the look of their smile. It is important to properly care for and maintain your new dentures if you want them to last as long as possible. The following article explores different tips to extend the longevity of your dentures.

1. Clean them daily

It is essential to clean dentures daily to remove food particles and plaque that can build up on them over time. Use a soft-bristled brush to clean the dentures thoroughly. Be gentle to avoid damaging them. A mild soap or specialized denture cleaner can clean them, but avoid using toothpaste as it can be too abrasive and may scratch the dentures' surface.

2. Rinse dentures after meals

After eating, remove the dentures and rinse them under lukewarm water. This practice can help remove any food particles stuck on them. It also prevents bacteria buildup that can lead to bad breath and other oral health issues. Do not use hot water, as it can cause dentures to warp and no longer fit one's mouth.

3. Soak dentures overnight

It is essential to keep dentures moist to prevent them from drying up. Place them in a denture cleaning solution or plain water to soak overnight. Follow the instructions on the cleaning solution carefully to avoid damaging the dentures.

4. Handle dentures with care

Dentures are delicate. They can break easily if their wearer mishandles them. When removing or inserting them, try to do so over a soft surface in order to prevent them from breaking if they fall or are dropped. It is also important to avoid bending or twisting them; these actions can cause them to warp or crack.

5. Keep your mouth clean

Good oral hygiene habits are essential, even if one has dentures or other artificial teeth. Brush all areas of your mouth (gums, tongue, and palate) with a soft-bristled brush to remove plaque and bacteria that can cause oral health issues. People can also use an antibacterial mouthwash to freshen their breath and kill any remaining bacteria in their mouth.

6. Store dentures properly

Dentures should be stored in a clean, dry place when not in use. Examples may include a glass of water or a denture container. However, be sure to change the water daily to prevent bacterial growth.

7. Visit your dentist

Visiting a dentist on a routine basis is essential to ensuring that one's dentures fit properly and are in good condition. The dentist will examine the dentures during each visit and make any adjustments to ensure they fit the patient's mouth and function as designed. In addition, they can detect issues early on and provide treatment before they become more serious problems.
