5 Ways to Keep Teeth White After a Teeth Whitening Procedure

Professional teeth whitening is a great way to achieve a brighter smile, and following a few guidelines can keep teeth white and healthy long after the procedure. There are certain things that every patient can do to ensure their smile remains bright and beautiful after leaving the cosmetic dentist office.
Tips for teeth whitening aftercare
For the most part, good teeth whitening aftercare is essentially the same as taking care of teeth otherwise. The better someone cares for their oral health, the brighter their smile is likely to stay following a professional whitening process, although there are a few subtle tricks to gain an even brighter smile as well.
1. Keep up good oral hygiene
The primary key to keeping teeth looking great and bright after a professional teeth whitening visit is to simply practice good oral hygiene. A good oral health routine should include brushing a couple of times each day and flossing and using mouthwash at least once per day, which removes bacteria inside the mouth and washes away food particles. If the tooth enamel can stay clean, strong and healthy, teeth are more likely to stay white.
2. Avoid certain foods
There are certain foods that have a higher chance of staining teeth, such as tomato-based dishes, soy sauce and citrus fruits. Of course, sugar can do a fair amount of damage to the shade of enamel as well. While it is okay to have pizza or a couple of cookies once in a while, it is encouraged to try to limit the intake of foods harmful to teeth and brush after a meal that may increase acidic erosion to the enamel. Dairy products and other foods high in calcium are great alternatives.
3. Drink water often
The best plan is to keep a water bottle near you at all times and to sip on it throughout the day, whether you are thirsty or not, to keep the teeth clean and stain-free. Milk is also good for teeth as it strengthens and restores minerals in teeth due to the calcium found in dairy products.
4. Use a whitening toothpaste
Whitening toothpaste is helpful in maintaining the shade of teeth following a professional whitening procedure, but many cosmetic dentists recommend not using it more than several times each week. Instead, consider primarily using toothpaste formulated for oral health reasons and using a separate whitening toothpaste one day a week.
5. Visit the dentist regularly
All too many people only visit the dentist when they need something, such as when suffering from teeth sensitivity or for teeth whitening. However, frequent visits to the dentist for check-ups and routine cleanings are a great way to detect potential complications before they develop and keep teeth clean and looking great.
