5 Tips During Your Invisalign® Treatment

When achieving a healthier, more attractive smile with Invisalign®, it is essential to follow certain care tips to ensure the treatment process goes smoothly. There are certain things that each patient should do during oral care while eating and in other areas to ensure a successful process.

Care tips for Invisalign® treatment

By fully understanding how to care for both teeth and the aligners through good oral hygiene, patients can ensure successful results. The following are five tips to keep in mind on the path to a more attractive smile through Invisalign® treatment.

1. Stay consistent

First and foremost, it is imperative to remain consistent when wearing Invisalign® aligners. Most cosmetic dentists encourage patients to wear their aligners for a minimum of 20 to 22 hours each day. In other words, it is recommended to only remove the aligners when it is absolutely necessary to do so, which is typically only during oral care routines or while eating. Other exceptions such as when playing a contact sport may require removal as well, but the aligners should always be put back in immediately after.

2. Maintain good oral hygiene

Saliva is not capable of washing away bacteria and food particles while wearing the Invisalign® aligners, which means practicing good oral hygiene consistently is important. Cosmetic dentists encourage patients to brush at least two or three times each day, floss after each meal and use mouthwash regularly. This ensures teeth remain clean and stain-free during and after the treatment.

3. Use the aligners case

Not only is it important to keep teeth and gums clean during treatment, but it is also important to keep the aligners themselves clean as well. Be certain to always place the aligners into the Invisalign® case provided by the cosmetic dentist when they are not being worn. Additionally, patients should rinse the aligners each time they are removed and clean them non-abrasively once each day.

4. Avoid harmful foods

Patients do not have as many food and drink restrictions with Invisalign® as they do with traditional braces, but it is still helpful to be aware of the potential risks with certain food types. For example, foods and drinks that are high in sugar may increase the chance of cavities, especially if the food particles become trapped between teeth and the aligners.

5. Make all scheduled visits

A benefit of Invisalign® is that the entire process is monitored by a dental professional, ensuring quality results and a safe treatment process. For the fastest results, patients should strive to make it to all scheduled visits with the cosmetic dentist, especially those in which new aligners are provided.
